Again we find another film inspirated in this tragic period of time: the fall of the Roman Empire. However, Kevin Macdonald presents us the situation that Britain was in that moments of the last dominions of the Romans during the II Century. This film is based on Rosemary Sutcliff novel and opens the drop curtain to us to show the conflict between the Romans that were defending the Britain frontier from the tribes of the North. He presents two characters, two diferents realities: a Roman centurion, Marcus Aquila, and his Britain slave, Esca. However, their friendship that mantein both of them results so artificial (in that period of time, in Rome, it was inconceivable to reduce themselves to the dignity of a slave or to even consider them like persons), both demonstrate a depth idea of friendship and loyalty. The combats between the Romans against the barbarians are so worked, convincing, although they are so fast and with confused movements. The Roman and the Britain slave venture themselves and they cross the Adrian Wall. Both start an exotic scenenography of Britain, present it wild and stranger looking for the lot eagle of the Ninth Legion (a symbol of the Empire). A plot that goes arround its main character and his pledge that pretend to convince us about his intention of know the truth and recover the honor of his father with this flashbacks imitating films like Gladiator. There are two worlds face to face: a civilate Rome (but with cristianism beliefs in the value of the Life and Humanity) and this barbarian reality, exotic and strange, presented in an ancient language, that it is not so convincing.
